An Attempt at Immortality

HomeWho is goodbeachboy?Aug 20, 2006
My best memories are my days spent at the beach. To immortalize these experiences, I take mental pictures of these experiences- the tranquility of the scenery, a lay back sunny afternoon or the playful frolic among the crashing waves. These come in handy when I am drowning in melancholy or there is nothing else to do.

Blog EntryA Piece of Old BoracayJun 3, '08 10:55 AM
for everyone
I visited Boracay with my eldest child Jakob who is nearly 7 years old.  It was part of our summer bonding.  As Jakob is getting to be very curious child, I make sure that he enjoys as much as he can.  Bringing Jakob to Boracay is my way of sharing to him my own happy memories as a child.  I was in the same age when I first visited Boracay with my parents.  I still have vivid mental pictures of what the island was in the 1970s.  It has a lone resort, there was no electricity, no fast food or night clubs and best of all- no irritating vendors with expensive souvenirs. I also remember that there were two German tourists at the resort who shocked our party with their naked glory.   They did not mind just like the other tourists during the 1970s and 1980s.  It was during the 1990s when sunbathing nude in Boracay has become extinct. As i was driving towards Caticlan, I was crossing my fingers that Jakob's Boracay escapade will turn out fine.  All my best wishes came through when I was met with a good sunny weather, a calm sea and a nearly deserted island.  Jakob could not be more surprised and mesmerized by the white sand beaches and the clear waters which stretched from Stations 1 to  3.  I was also surprised to see no seaweeds on the white beach making it nearly picture perfect.  God is indeed so good to give Jakob the Boracay scene I used to know.

I was lucky to visit Boracay during the off peak season. I was amazed by the island's resiliency in view of continued over exploitation of its natural beauty. Once again, I was able to enjoy tranquility as I walked along the beach early in the morning. The beach front was majestic without traces of the disturbing green algae. The beach was pure white and the sea dreamy blue green.

My last visit reminded me of my first visit to the island. How I wish it could have stayed that way.

There was a time when Kalibo hosted the best street party every second week of January. Celebrities from Manila and an all-star cast of Santo Nino devotees troop to the sleepy town to pay tribute to the Santo Nino and enjoy street dancing and merry making.

This was before the Dinagyang and Sinulog. Kalibo Ati-atihan is the original.

Photos taken during my November 2-8, 2007 trip to Shanghai, Suzhou and Hongkong. I went with a group of clients interested in purchasing electric motorbikes to be used as alternative transportation for a local government unit. For me it was an admirable goal especially that fuel fossils are not only getting expensive but pollutive. Our ultimate destination is the bustling city of Suzhou which is called "Venice of the East". We passed by Shanghai and spend the early evening along the Bund. On the way back we had a brief time in Hongkong where I met up with my wife for a much needed holiday.

I am lucky to be invited by a group of friends and clients to visit Beijing. It was raining heavily when we arrived there. As such, my much awaited visit to the Great Wall was...well...remainsl elusive. Surprisingly the sun appeared the following day and gave me the opportunity to go around China's capital. With my friend Webber Chou, I was able to tour Jiansiang Park and the Forbidden City.

I grew up in a house with lots of guns. I was the teenager who had an M-16 under the bed. I love guns and somehow became responsible and highly respectful of the devastation it can do to an untrained person. Yet, its been a while since I have fired a pistol or rifle. I have traded my love for guns to another kind of shooting. Photo shooting that is...

The Philippines is known as a Fiesta Republic. Holidays and fiestas dot the calendar. For me, I have the pleasure of shooting the colorful Ati-atihan festival of my native Kalibo.
